Creating an Illustrated Field Journal

  • James Freed Design Studio SEBASTOPOL United States (map)

I love being outdoors. And when I can combine my love of drawing with being outside that is a very good day. During this two-day workshop, I cover the practical basics of drawing and using watercolor and gouache on location when creating an illustrated field journal. Two days of instruction will include examples, observational drawing practice and demonstrations. I’ll provide you with some effective tools and techniques that will help you to improve your drawing and create a field journal filled with your own direct from life illustrations. We will begin work in the studio setting learning about how to set up an illustrated field journal, do some drawing warmup practice using my extensive natural history artifact collection as subject matter, and then head out into the field. The second day will focus on color mixing and application and may include a field trip to a local park for added interest and practice. This is a hands on drawing and painting workshop.
